The teacher can then extend the concept by saying:

“What does the author do? What did our author, Donald Crews, do?”

This same procedure can be followed for the role of the illustrator and/or photographer. Note that the book convention concepts do not require an extended amount of instruction prior to the shared reading session. Students quickly grasp these basic concepts if attention is drawn to them repeatedly. See Figure 5.4 for a recap of the book conventions that are easily taught during shared reading.
